GYÖRGY KURTÁG AT 100 | Concert by students of the Brussels Academies

He spans a century... or rather two! The composer György Kurtág is one of the most remarkable figures in contemporary music creation of the 20th and 21st centuries. Moreover, last February he reached the – equally remarkable – age of 100.

While building upon the legacy of his Hungarian compatriot Béla Bartók, who preceded him by a generation, he was also inspired by his deep connection with Robert Schumann and Johann Sebastian Bach (whose scores he sometimes arranges). Kurtág is known for his countless, often very short compositions, in which he devotes the utmost care to every note.

To celebrate the birthday of this exceptional artist, Ars Musica and the Hungarian Cultural Institute are organizing a three-part Kurtág Day. The program starts with children who participated in Laurence Mekhitarian's workshops. They will play pieces from Játékok ( Playing ): piano pieces that allow them to discover the keyboard through play. Next, it is the turn of more experienced musicians. The evening concludes with an ensemble of clarinet, violin, piano, and the fascinating cimbalom (a well-known Hungarian string instrument, beloved by street musicians, whose horizontally stretched strings are struck with small hammers). A wonderful opportunity to bring together all of Kurtág's musical influences, from Bach to today. A concert for young and old... from 1 to 101 years old?
