GYÖRGY KURTÁG AT 100 | Concert of students from academies in the Brussels region

Hungarian Cultural Center , Brussels

Following workshops, young pianists take on the Játékok (Games), followed by chamber music students from academies in Brussels-Capital, and by Les Siècles de Kúrtag, an evening concert where the pieces of the Hungarian master converse with his own masters: Bach, Schumann and Bártok!

It spans a century… or rather two! A remarkable figure in 20th and 21st-century creation, the composer György Kurtág reached the equally remarkable age of 100 in February. Drawing on the inevitable legacy of the Hungarian Béla Bartók, who preceded him by a generation, but also on his affinity for Robert Schumann and Johann Sebastian Bach, whose scores he sometimes transcribed, Kurtág is the author of numerous, often very short, scores in which infinite care is given to each note.

To celebrate the birthday of this exceptional figure, the Hungarian Cultural Institute and Ars Musica are organizing a three-part Kurtág Day. Following workshops led by Laurence Mekhitarian, children will perform Játékok (Games), piano pieces that introduce them to the keyboard. More experienced instrumentalists will then take the stage, and the evening will conclude with clarinet, violin, piano, and the fascinating cimbalom (a Hungarian instrument, often played in the street, whose horizontal strings are struck with small sticks): a way to connect all of Kurtág's influences, from Bach to the present day. A concert for young and old… from 1 to 101 years old?
