Brussels Philharmonic & Bryce Dessner
Bozar - Henry Le Boeuf Room , BrusselsBryce Dessner's concertos offer a different perspective on a musician who cultivates a field of expression between rock and chamber music, with soloists Alice Sara Ott and Pekka Kuusisto.
Composer for orchestra and chamber music, Bryce Dessner, born in 1976, also writes film scores and co-founded the renowned band The National. Three works, presented for the first time in Belgium, comprise the program of his concertos. Inspired by the beauty of Alice Sara Ott's piano playing and dedicated to the musician's sister, Jessica Reese Dessner, Bryce Dessner's Piano Concerto celebrates dance as choreographic music. Inspired by Jack Kerouac's Big Sur , St. Carolyne by the Sea translates the Beat Generation writer's hallucinations into a concerto with post-Romantic and more abrupt movements, featuring soloists Bryce Dessner himself and David Chalmin. Finally, Bryce Dessner's violin concerto, performed by violinist Pekka Kuusisto, draws a parallel between walking, strolling, or hiking, and the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James), not far from where Dessner lives. Between land and sea, the movements of this violin concerto were conceived within this symbolic and spatial, pastoral and musical journey.
